History |
|
This is the island where Danae landed, with her son from Zeus, Perseus, after being locked into a box and thrown into the sea by Danae's upset father. Perseus grew up into a fine young man, but trouble soon came. The king of the island fell in love with Danae, who did not return his affection. The king thought if he had time alone with her, she would be persuaded, so he sent Perseus on an impossible mission hoping that he would never return. Perseus succeeded in this mission, which was to kill Medusa, and when he returned, he turned the king into stone when he showed him Medusa's head.
Serifos had a system of democracy since the 7th century. It was a vassal state to Athens, until later years when it was subjugated to the Macedonians, Romans, Byzantine Empire, Venetians and the Turks. It was also under constant raids by pirates. It fought alongside Greece against the Turks since 1821 and was liberated along with the rest of Greece.
Serifos at one time had great iron and copper mines, which are now deserted. Megalo Livadi was the main loading port. Chora once fortified with a Byzantine Venetian castle

Religion |
|
This topic is not island-specific. It applies to the nation of Greece.
Orthodox Christianity is the recognized dominant religion of Greece and it is legally protected by the state. This has caused legal discrimination against non-Orthodox Churches, and although the constitution of 1975 removed the power of most of the old laws against Protestants, problems still exist today. There is a lot of fear towards anything outside of the Orthodox Church, especially on the islands. However, repeated rulings of the European Court of Justice in favour of religious minorities in cases of discrimination have led to a relative increase of the freedoms that these religious minorities now enjoy.
