History
The island was first inhabited in the early Neolithic period 8000-7000 B.C. Evidence of this is found in the cave of Harcadio.

Both the Minoans and the Mycenaean’s appear to have settled on the island and from excavations carried out Pelasgian walls were also found.

However the island's most important period was the 7th century BC when Tilians together with Lindians settled in Sicily and built the well-known city of Gelas. The tyrants Gelon and Ieron were from Tilos.

The island flourished during the classical era also having its own coinage and being famous for clothing and perfumes. There after, the history of Tilos followed that of Rhodes to which the island was united.

In Byzantine times, together with Nissiros, Kos, and Samos it constituted the Samos Issue. The Knights of St. John who either reconstructed or built three of the island’s castles inhabited it. At this time ecclesiastical wall painting was developed. In 1522 the island was conquered by the Turks who occupied it until 1948 when it was reunited with Hellas.

Religion
This topic is not island-specific. It applies to the nation of Greece.

Orthodox Christianity is the recognized dominant religion of Greece and it is legally protected by the state. This has caused legal discrimination against non-Orthodox Churches, and although the constitution of 1975 removed the power of most of the old laws against Protestants, problems still exist today. There is a lot of fear towards anything outside of the Orthodox Church, especially on the islands. However, repeated rulings of the European Court of Justice in favour of religious minorities in cases of discrimination have led to a relative increase of the freedoms that these religious minorities now enjoy.
